Vintage inspired Valentine gift

For Valentine's Day this year, the hubby made me a very sweet present. He is a great crafter and knows I love all things vintage and retro. He picked out this adorable vintage inspired Valentine paper and went to work in the garage, not allowing me to peek!

He painted a wooden heart, dowel, and stand and then drilled a hole and glued the items together after modge podging the paper to both sides of the heart.  Under the bottom of stand, he wrote me a love note too :)

I swear it is cuter in person, the picture just doesn't do it justice!

Retro Inspired Christmas card

I bought a few boxes of these cards, years back. I laugh every time I come across them!  I scanned one so I could always have an electronic version.

Love the tinsel feather tree!

Christmas Shadowbox

I was inspired by this blog I like to follow called "Two Crazy Crafters". This is a mother and daughter duo who also own a scrapbook store.  The daughter made a "Christmas Shadowbox" that I thought was adorable!

Over the weekend, I made this...

I used a vintage snowman pin at the top and a vintage button in the middle, along with bottle brush trees and a vintage ornament near the bottom.

I used a vintage wooden painted snowman ornament, more buttons, adhesive card stock and another bottle brush tree.
I found this vintage, painted red, wooden utensil tray at a local antique store for $10, which I felt was a fair price.
I cut out Christmas styled scrapbook paper and glued to the tray.

Sorry for the blurry pics.  I only use my iPhone anymore cause using a camera is such a pain!

Vintage Santa Mugs

After seeing these adorable Santa mug bottle brush trees on Pinterest and Etsy, I really wanted to find some Santa mugs!

I started looking for vintage Santa mugs.  Every time I saw them on eBay or elsewhere, they were expensive.  Seems like they are making a comeback or something.  Anyways, low and behold, I found a set of eight punch mugs at a local thrift store for the grand total of $2.99!

One way you can sort of date vintage items like these mugs is to see the stamp "Japan" on the back.  America put a halt to imports from Japan from 1939-1945 due to the war issues.  So, these mugs are either pre-war or late 40s, 50s, or 60s.  My guess would be 50s or 60s but who knows.

Now, I just need to figure out how to turn the mugs into one of these...

I just can't get enough of retro Christmas items no matter what time of year it is!

P.S. for those of you interested...the makers of this item has a blog and an Etsy shop.  Click here to check it out:)

Homemade Snow Globes

Well, I realize it is March but I am going to post about my snow globes I made this year for handmade Christmas presents. They were a hit with my nephew and are fairly easy to make.

Supplies you will need...
--Different sized jars ( I purchased some new canning jars at Walmart).
--Trinkets or ornaments
--Distilled water
--Superglue
--Faux snow and glitter
--Glycerin ( this was hard to find but it is in the medical section of stores and comes as a clear liquid form in a bottle).

Searching for the trinkets and ornaments was so fun!  I scored thrift stores to made vintage "made in japan" wooden and plastic ornaments and trinkets.  Once you have those, you are good to go!

Just glue the item to the lid of the jar (making sure it is placed so that the jar still closes when standing up right).  Let them sit that way for 24 hours with the superglue.  Next add your faux snow and glitter ( I used different kinds of glitter).  Fill the jar up with the distilled water and add a few drops of glycerin, which helps the snow to not stick.  Practice with the jar by flipping it over a few times.  I noticed that I usually never put enough water in and had to figure the approximate amount every time I made one.  Once your jar is ready to go, unscrew the lid and superglue around the inside of the lid.  Screw the lid back on and let it sit for another 24 hours.

I pretty much followed Martha Stewart's directions.  Click here to go to a direct link for those.
